Centre for Governance and Capacity Development

The Centre for Governance and Capacity Development (CGCD) promotes good governance by strengthening the capacity of institutions, enhancing public sector efficiency, building capacity for officials and leaders, supporting policy reform and anti-corruption efforts.

Through international partnerships, CGCD aligns local reforms with global best practices for sustainable development and social stability.  The Africa Leadership Foundation (ALF) addresses African challenges in this sector by diagnosing local and global issues from an African perspective, encouraging informed solution-finding and collaboration. ALF initiates phased action programs, dialogues, and workshops to foster cooperation and tailored solutions. ALF’s activities focus on capacity building, training, research, and policy advocacy, with a pan-African scope working to institutionalize sustainable development across the continent since 1988

Democratic Leadership Training Workshop (DLTW)
A 10-year project, which empowered African youth for democratic leadership by building capacity, fostering networks, and imparting essential skills. Workshops were held across multiple locations, including Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Namibia, and Kenya. The initiative promoted participatory democracy, human rights, and effective leadership. Young leaders were equipped with knowledge and skills for future leadership challenges.
Parliamentarians and the Sustenance of Political Liberty in Africa
A research project, it explored African parliaments, multiparty systems, and democratic sustainability, examining how these elements function and impact governance in Africa.
Democracy & Governance in Africa
This review explored Africa's complex journey to democracy and governance. It highlighted the crucial need to protect fundamental human rights and freedoms as a foundation for Africa's democratic development.

CSSDCA- An Agenda for Africa: The Conference on Security Stability Development and Cooperation in Africa (CSSDCA)
The Conference on Security, Stability, Development and Cooperation in Africa (CSSDCA) initiative, conceptualized by ALF, was adopted by African Union Heads of State in 2002. It shaped Africa's security architecture and informed key initiatives like NEPAD and APRM.
UNDP-ALF Election and Voters Education Project
A UNDP-funded initiative, implemented by ALF, provided election education and awareness in Nigeria's South-South Zone ahead of the 2011 general election, contributing to a peaceful and successful electoral process.
Political Parties and Good Governance in Nigeria
The Farm House Dialogue Series focused on forming a multiparty system to enhance good governance in Nigeria. Key recommendations include; the need to limit the number of political parties devoid of ethnic coloration as well as effective supervision of sub-national election boards.
Democracy, Gender and Development Programme
ALF through the African Women Forum (AWF), promotes women's rights and participation in governance and engages women on issues like political empowerment and leadership through research, training, and advocacy. ALF collaborates with partners to develop tools for monitoring gender equality commitments, such as the Maputo Protocol.
Parliamentary Support Programme (PSP)
ALF strengthened the capacity of African parliaments through training for lawmakers and parliamentary staff, internship programs for students, and capacity-building workshops to enhance parliamentary effectiveness and promote democratic governance. These efforts aimed to balance power distribution and improve citizen representation.
Comparative Study of Existing Sub-regional Security Protocol in Africa
This comparative study examined sub-regional security networks in Africa, focusing on threats from non-state actors, small arms proliferation, and demilitarization efforts, including US interests and the role of the African Elders Council for Peace
Partners for Peace
This initiative, led by H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, documented the mediation efforts between the Sudanese government and the SPLM/SPLA, aiming to bring peace to Sudan.

Africa & the Challenges of a Union Government
Led by former president of Nigeria, H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, ALF explored the concept of a Union Government for Africa, uniting stakeholders from five regions and recommending a multi-layered approach based on shared values and principles
